Chapter Twenty

Night Hawk stretched his long, lean legs out beside the campfire and watched Crying Wolf slowly turn a spit with a skinned rabbit skewered to it. The aroma was already sending its tantalizing smells into the early evening's open air. The juices made the fire sizzle.

Night Hawk could not get Jae off his mind. He felt guilty for having turned his back on her. Yet, for so many reasons, he felt no other choice. If he knew for certain that she truly loved him enough to live with him in an Indian village, that would be a different matter.

If she had not spoken so often of wanting so much, and then having it handed to her on a silver platter upon her arrival at her true father's house, he would have considered her accepting the way of life that he could offer her.

But she had given him too many masons to doubt her. And she had shown her inability to be loyal by having left her true father so soon after becoming acquainted with him!

Yes, he worried to himself, there were too many things that could go wrong if he had allowed her to stay with him.

And he had enough on his mind. The hurt still lay deeply inside his heart. He was not sure if he could ever get over the knowledge that he had meant so little to his adoptive father throughout the years. Crying Wolf had also heard. He reached for his rifle.

They both stared in disbelief as a raccoon sauntered into view.

Night Hawk gasped with surprise when the raccoon came to him, its dark, beady eyes wide and imploring as it stared up at him, then scratched at him with its humanlike hand, as though trying to tell Night Hawk something.

Night Hawk paled and went cold inside when he realized that this raccoon was Snoopy. It was Jae's pet! And for it to be there, pleading with Night Hawk, meant that Jae had to be somewhere close by.

"Surely Jae followed us!" Night Hawk said, giving Crying Wolf a quick, frightened stare. "It's Snoopy. Jae has to be near. Perhaps she is in trouble."

A sudden shrill scream filled the night air. Night Hawk died a slow death inside to think that it must be Jae!

He scrambled to his feet, and with a pounding heart, he followed the direction of the scream, Crying Wolf huffing at his side.

They soon found two tethered horses.

Night Hawk recognized one: it was the horse that he had seen Jae tiding earlier in the day.

They went a short distance farther, then
